The best reading pillows for sitting up in bed
By the pillowed-it teamLast reviewed May 2026
A reading pillow has one job: hold you upright comfortably for an hour or three without your back giving up. The category splits into two camps — backrests with arms (sit-up-and-read) and wedges (incline-and-recline). The right pick depends on what you're actually doing — reading, working, watching, or recovering.
Backrest pillows with arms
The classic reading pillow: a high upholstered back with two side bolsters and usually a neck roll. Best for sitting upright, supported lumbar, hands free. Look for filled-foam shells (not just poly fluff), and pay attention to the cover material — corduroy and velvet feel premium and clean up easier than printed cotton.
Wedge pillows
A foam triangle that lifts your upper body to a fixed incline (usually 30°–45°). Best for elevated sleeping, acid reflux, post-surgery recovery, or just propped-up reading. Memory foam wedges hold their shape; poly-fill wedges sag inside a year. The trade-off is that wedges aren't great for sustained reading — your shoulders aren't supported on the sides.
What to look for
Firmness above all — a reading pillow that compresses flat in 20 minutes is useless. Check the fill type (memory foam > shredded foam > poly fluff). Check the cover (removable + machine-washable beats fixed). Width matters: 18" minimum for adult shoulders, 22"+ if you're tall. And read the 1-star reviews specifically for collapse-after-six-months complaints.
If your back hurts
Skip the velvet TikTok loungers — most are poly-fluff with thin foam strips. Go to a memory-foam wedge or a backrest with a dense polyurethane core. Lumbar support is non-negotiable. A 12" wedge under the lower back as a secondary lumbar pillow makes a bigger difference than upgrading the backrest.
